What would you do if you were given an extra day? How would you celebrate those extra moments? Would you start the day with a cup of coffee or a meditative walk watching the sunrise and ending with a great meal and a table full of loved ones at sunset? Would you make time to have lunch with …

Florida’s ban on most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy has gone into effect, and some doctors are concerned that women in the state will no longer have access to needed health care. Fertility specialist Dr. Leah Roberts says the anti-abortion laws being enacted by Florida and other red states are being vaguely written by people who don’t understand medical science. Many women don’t even know they are pregnant by six weeks. The ban that went into effect Wednesday affects not just women who want to terminate viable pregnancies because of personal choice, but also nonviable pregnancies for women who want to have babies.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Israel for meetings with Israeli leaders and has told the country’s ceremonial president that “the time is now” for a cease-fire deal in the war in Gaza. This is Blinken’s seventh visit since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in October. He is trying to advance a truce that would free hostages held by Gaza’s Hamas militants in exchange for a halt to the fighting. Palestinian prisoners are also expected to be released as part of the deal. Israel’s war against Hamas has flattened huge swaths of Gaza’s north, and famine is imminent for the hundreds of thousands of civilians who remain there.

City authorities in southern China's Guangdong province say a section of a highway has collapsed leaving at least 19 people dead. The incident occurred early Wednesday after the area had experienced heavy rain in recent days. Eighteen cars fell down a slope after a 58.7-foot-long section of the highway collapsed, according to a statement from authorities in Meizhou city in Guangdong province. Witnesses told local media they heard a loud noise and saw a hole open up several meters wide behind them after driving past the section of the road just before it collapsed. Video and photos in local media showed smoke and fire at the scene, with highway rails slanting downward into the flames. Rescue workers have taken 30 people to the hospital, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is meeting with Israeli leaders in his push for a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas, saying that “the time is now" for an agreement that would free hostages and bring a pause in the nearly seven months of war. He has said that Hamas would bear the blame for any failure to get a deal off the ground. Blinken is on his seventh visit to the region since the war erupted, seeking to secure what’s been an elusive deal between Israel and Hamas that could avert an Israeli incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are sheltering.

Workers, activists and others in Asian capitals are marking May Day with rallies and marches to call for better working conditions and greater labor rights. In Seoul, thousands of protesters sang, waved flags and shouted pro-labor slogans at the start of their rally on Wednesday. Organizers said their rally was primarily meant to step up their criticism of what they call anti-labor policies pursued by the conservative government led by President Yoon Suk Yeol. In the Philippine capital, Manila, hundreds of workers and left-wing activists marched to demand wage increases and job security amid soaring food and oil prices.

Asian stocks fall with most of the markets in the region closed for a holiday after U.S. stocks closed out their worst month since September. Oil prices were lower and U.S. futures were mixed. The S&P 500 fell 1.6% Tuesday to pull it further from its record set at the end of March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.5%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 2%. Treasury yields rose again to up the pressure on stocks after a report showed workers won bigger gains in pay and benefits during the start of the year than expected. Such hotter-than-expected data has diminished traders’ expectations for how many times the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates this year.
