United Methodist delegates have begun making historic policy changes on sexuality, voting without debate to reverse a series of anti-LGBTQ policies. The delegates voted to delete mandatory penalties for clergy conducting same-sex marriages. They also removed their denomination’s bans on considering LGBTQ candidates for ministry and on funding for gay-friendly ministries. The 667-54 vote removes scaffolding around the United Methodist Church’s longstanding bans on LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage. Still to come later this week are votes on the core of the bans. It follows the departure of one-quarter of U.S. congregations, mainly conservatives dismayed by progressive trends in the UMC. It remains uncertain whether the conservative, fast-growing churches of Africa will stay or go.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country. The Justice Department proposal still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget. It would recognize the medical use cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some other drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana. The agency’s move was confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review.
