A defense witness in Donald Trump’s hush money case whom the judge threatened to remove from the trial over his behavior has returned to the stand as the trial nears its end. Trump’s lawyers hope Robert Costello’s testimony will help undermine the credibility of a key prosecution witness, Trump fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen. Costello turned to Judge Juan M. Merchan before the jurors arrived to the court Tuesday, speaking quietly. The judge acknowledged him and nodded. It was a much more cordial scene than the drama that unfolded during Monday’s proceedings, when Costello made comments under his breath during testimony, rolled his eyes and called the whole exercise “ridiculous.”
As Donald Trump's hush money trial resumes, witness testimony could be entering its final day. Prosecutors have already rested their case and the defense may follow suit on Tuesday after calling just a handful of witnesses. Attorney Robert Costello, the defense's second witness, has returned to the stand. The trial is in its 20th day. Judge Juan M. Merchan says that once the defense rests, he will send jurors home until closing arguments on the day after Memorial Day. Prosecutors say Trump falsified internal business records to cover up hush money payments to two women. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts.
U.S. stocks are holding relatively steady near their record levels as Wall Street appears to be headed for another quiet day. The S&P 500 was down 0.1% early Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was flat, and the Nasdaq composite was off 0.3%. Palo Alto Networks joined the long list of companies reporting better profits than analysts expected, but its stock fell after giving a forecast for upcoming revenue that failed to please investors. Macy’s jumped after reporting more resilient results than analysts feared. Treasury yields fell in the bond market. Stock indexes fell across much of Europe and Asia.
Israeli officials have seized a camera and broadcasting equipment belonging to The Associated Press in southern Israel. Officials accused the news organization of violating a new media law by providing images to Al Jazeera. The Qatari satellite channel is among thousands of clients that receive live video feeds from the AP and other news organizations. The AP denounced the move. Officials from the Communications Ministry arrived at the AP location in the southern town of Sderot on Tuesday afternoon and seized the equipment.
British man dies and several passengers are injured when turbulence hits a Singapore Airlines flight
Singapore Airlines says a 73-year-old British man died and more than two dozen other passengers were injured aboard a London-Singapore flight that encountered severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean. The plane was then diverted to Bangkok, where emergency crews rushed to help the passengers after the plane touched down at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Tuesday. The airline said the Boeing 777 from Heathrow had 211 passengers and 18 crew on board. Singapore Airlines said that as of four hours after the emergency landing, 18 individuals remained in hospital. Another 12 were treated on outpatient basis. The British man who died is suspected to have suffered a heart attack.

Some 16 AI companies made voluntary committments to AI safety as the talks got underway.
