WEST DES MOINES — Many health risks — like sitting too much, eating unhealthy foods and smoking — can be avoided. Other health threats — like not being able to get certain prescription medicines — are out of our control and can wreak havoc.

The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are proud to announce the 15th Annual Iowa’s Best Burger Contest. Nominations will be taken from Monday, February 12 to Tuesday, March 12.

The container ship that caused the deadly collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was slowly escorted back to port. The Dali had remained at the collapse site since it lost power and crashed into one of the bridge’s supporting columns in March. The disaster killed six construction workers and snarled traffic into Baltimore Harbor. Several tugboats are escorting the Dali on its 2.5-mile path to the marine terminal on Monday morning. Pieces of the bridge’s steel trusses still protrude from the ship’s bow, which remains covered in mangled concrete from the collapsed roadway.

The United States says it “fundamentally rejects” a request by the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor to seek arrest warrants for Israeli leaders in connection with the seven-month war. ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan announced his intention to seek warrants for both Israeli and Hamas leaders. His announcement came the same day Israel said it would expand operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah in its effort to crush Hamas. Adding to the region's extraordinary tensions, Iranian officials announced the death of its president and foreign minister Monday in a helicopter crash. Iran backs Hamas, and last month launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the move by war crimes prosecutor to seek his arrest as a “disgrace” and attack on the Israeli military and all of Israel. In a statement, Netanyahu also vowed to press ahead with Israel’s war against Hamas militants. Netanyahu said the request for an arrest warrant was “absurd” and accused the prosecution of antisemitism.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the country’s foreign minister have been found dead hours after their helicopter crashed in fog. That leaves the Islamic Republic without two key leaders as extraordinary tensions grip the wider Middle East. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei quickly named a little-known vice president as caretaker Monday. The supreme leader has the final say in the Shiite theocracy. He insisted the government was in control, but the deaths mark yet another blow to a country beset by pressures both at home and abroad. Iran has offered no cause for the crash nor suggested sabotage brought down the helicopter. It fell in mountainous terrain in a sudden, intense fog.

Iran's state media has reported that Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has died in a helicopter crash that also killed the country's president. He was 60. Amirabdollahian was a hard-liner close to the Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard who confronted the West while also overseeing indirect talks with the U.S. over the country’s nuclear program. State media said Monday that he died in the helicopter crash Sunday that also killed President Ebrahim Raisi. Amirabdollahian represented the hard-line shift in Iran after the collapse of Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers after then President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the accord.
