A defense witness in Donald Trump’s New York hush money case whom the judge threatened to remove over his behavior will return to the stand as the trial nears its end. Trump’s lawyers are hoping Robert Costello’s testimony Tuesday will help undermine the credibility of a key prosecution witness, Trump fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen. But Costello angered the judge Monday, prompting the judge to briefly kick reporters out of the courtroom to admonish him. The chaotic scene unfolded after prosecutors rested their case accusing the Republican ex-president of falsifying business records as part of a scheme to bury stories he feared could hurt his 2016 campaign. Trump denies any wrongdoing.
Former Arizona Republican Party chair Kelli Ward and at least 11 other people are scheduled to be arraigned in a Phoenix courtroom on felony charges for their role in the effort to overturn Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss in Arizona to Joe Biden. Tuesday's arraignment hearing will be the second held in the case since felony charges were unveiled last month. Defendants include 11 Republicans who had submitted a document to Congress falsely declaring Trump had won Arizona, five lawyers connected to the former president and two former Trump aides. Lawyer Rudy Giuliani also is scheduled to be arraigned, though it’s unclear whether he’ll seek a postponement.
As Donald Trump's hush money trial resumes, witness testimony could be entering its final day. Prosecutors have already rested their case and the defense may follow suit on Tuesday after calling just a handful of witnesses. Attorney Robert Costello, the defense's second witness, is expected to return to the stand. The trial is in its 20th day. Judge Juan M. Merchan says that once the defense rests, he will send jurors home until closing arguments on the day after Memorial Day. Prosecutors say Trump falsified internal business records to cover up hush money payments to two women. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts.
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has taken the landmark step of requesting arrest warrants for top Israeli and Hamas leaders over the Gaza war and the October 7 attack.
Israel is seeking to contain the fallout from a request by the chief prosecutor of the world’s top war crimes court for arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders. The move was supported by three European countries, including key ally France. Belgium, Slovenia and France each said Monday they backed the decision by International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan. He accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Israel. While no one faces imminent arrest, the announcement deepens Israel’s global isolation at a time when it is facing growing criticism from even its closest allies over the war in Gaza.
Mourners began gathering Tuesday for days of funerals and processions for Iran’s late president, foreign minister and others killed in a helicopter crash. For Iran’s Shiite theocracy, mass demonstrations have been crucial since millions thronged the streets of Tehran to welcome Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution. Whether President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and others draw large crowds remains in question, particularly as Raisi died in a helicopter crash, won his office in the lowest-turnout election in the country’s history and presided over crackdowns on all dissent. Prosecutors have warned people over celebrating his death and a heavy security force presence has been seen on the streets of Tehran since the crash.
