A new report shows that the head of Maui's emergency management agency dragged his heels about returning to the island as wildfires ripped across the island last August. That came as a broader communications breakdown left authorities in the dark and residents without emergency alerts. The report released Wednesday says communications problems were also encountered by the Hawaiian Electric Company. And officials were unable to confirm that power lines were de-energized until well after the flames had caused widespread damage. The report is the second of two major assessments out this week about the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century.

Hugh Grant says he accepted “an enormous sum of money” to settle a lawsuit accusing the publisher of The Sun tabloid of unlawfully tapping his phone, bugging his car and breaking into his home to snoop on him. The actor said Wednesday that he did so reluctantly to avoid potentially hefty legal costs even if he prevailed at trial. His lawyer says court rules that promote settlements could force fellow claimant Prince Harry to also settle. The settlement amount was not disclosed. News Group Newspapers made no admission of liability and says it settled to avoid a costly trial.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country will be the one to decide whether and how to respond to Iran’s major air assault over the weekend. Netanyahu's remarks on Wednesday appeared to brush off calls for restraint from close allies, including the visiting foreign ministers of Germany and Britain. Israel has vowed to respond to Iran’s unprecedented attack without saying when or how. That's left the region bracing for further escalation after months of unrest linked to the ongoing war in Gaza. Iran's president warned Israel against responding. Violence meanwhile has continued to surge along Israel's border with Lebanon. A rocket attack on an Israeli town by Iran-backed Hezbollah wounded at least 14 people.
